A draft negotiation mandate that was adopted recently includes audiovisual and film services into the EU-US trade discussions, thereby endangering the very principle of cultural exception.

SMart feels strongly about this and is determined to act against these developments.

SMartIb is now a fact

Last week marked the creation of SMart Ibérica Andalusian Co-operative Society for Fostering Entrepreneurship (SMart Ibérica de Impulso Empresarial S. Coop. And.).

Julek Jurowicz and Leen Scholiers from the Brussels-based SMartEu team went to Malaga to sign the founding documents together with our partners based in Sevilla and Barcelona.

SMartIb’s official launch will be on 17 May. More information will follow soon!

SMartNL soon to offer services

SMartNL will start offering services in May. They’ll be focusing on both employed and self-employed creatives and will have their base in Amsterdam.

In fact, a lease has been signed on their first offices, situated in the heart of Amsterdam, right off the Leidseplein.

The exact address is Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 21 (3rd fl.) in Amsterdam.

SMartBe is showing its art collection at the Brussels OFF-Art Fair

The OFF-Art Fair in Brussels : SMartBe shows its art collection

The second edition of the OFF-Art Fair will take place at Tour & Taxis in Brussels from 19 to 22 April 2013.

Fifty national and international galleries will use this opportunity to present a selection of contemporary artists.

SMartBe is the only non-gallery to be invited at the OFF-Art Fair. We’ll be presenting some of the works in our « portraits d’artistes / Kunstenaarsportretten » (artist portraits) collection.

Pieces by Philip Akkerman, Hélène Amouzou, Tatiana Bohm, Jérôme Considérant, Matthias Lehmann, Michael Matthys and Boris Thiébaut will be featuring among the chosen works.

SMart’s Research Unit is gaining international interest and recognition

Although SMart’s Research Unit is currently fully focused on the Belgian creative sector, it will gradually expand to countries SMartEu is developing in.

An encouraging signal for this development has been an increase in international interest for our publications. With the 2010 study on comics cited twice already (in the European Comic Arts scientific review, and a University of Groningen PhD Thesis), we are confident the Research Unit’s efforts towards internationalisation in the near future will be successful.

2012 was a great year for SMart’s European development. New partnerships were established, new offices were set up and many lessons were learned.

We’re hoping 2013 will be just as successful, not just for us, but for the entire creative sector!

New year, new offices, new partners

In the past months, although the blog has been awfully quiet, a number of new and exciting developments have taken place!

SMartSe began offering services in Stockholm and SMartDe was officially created (their office is in Berlin).

Preliminary talks have been held with social entrepreneurs in Macedonia, Switzerland and Finland. More exciting yet; new partnerships have been set up with Estonia, Denmark, Italy and Hungary.
